Paper Development Workshop
The Strategic Management Society (SMS) is pleased to announce that a Paper Development Workshop will be held on Friday, December 14, 2012 preceding the SMS Special Conference in Guangzhou, China. This workshop will be held on the campus of Sun Yat-Sen Business School in Guangzhou.
The primary objective of the workshop is to provide advice to junior scholars who currently research China-related strategy, international business and entrepreneurship topics and wish to publish in international journals. Specifically, the workshop will provide junior faculty with developmental feedback on their current research projects in round-table sessions with internationally renowned scholars. These scholars will also share their insights into publishing journal papers, identifying research topics, selecting research methods, and framing research ideas. Meanwhile, participants will have the chance of meeting editors of major journals in strategic management (including SMJ, GSJ, AMJ, AMP, and AMR). Another objective of the workshop is to promote and strengthen ties between Chinese (or China-based) and international researchers. The workshop is structured to provide lots of opportunities for interactions between junior and senior scholars through faculty panels and round-table sessions.
Submissions:
Submission to the workshop is open to associate or assistant professors, post-docs, and Ph.D. candidates who are doing or are interested in doing China-related strategy, international business or entrepreneurship research.
Any topic or empirical focus is welcome as long as it is associated with China-related strategy, international business or entrepreneurship issues (e.g., innovation, competitiveness, strategic alliance, foreign direct investment, Chinese MNEs, corporate governance, and corporate social responsibility). Proposals and papers must be written in English.
We accept two types of submissions: full papers and research proposals. Full papers should contain the essential elements of a normal journal paper, and should be no more than 40 pages long (font size 12 and double spaced). Research proposals should at least include research questions, literature review, research design, and expected contributions and should be no more than 20 pages long. The format for submission should follow Strategic Management Journal paper submission guidelines (http://smj.strategicmanagement.net/). The deadline for submission is July 1, 2012.
Selection criteria
The number of participants is limited. The selection committee formed by the two Workshop Chairs will select participants based on the following criteria:
- 1. Significance of the research issues addressed
- 2. Theoretical/methodological novelty
- 3. Clarity of presentation
Format and Time Requirements
The workshop will be organized as follows: morning session will consist of panel discussions and presentations by leading scholars. In the afternoon, participants and senior faculty will split up into small groups to discuss papers and research proposals of the participants.
The workshop will be five hours in total: Two hours in the morning session and three hours in the afternoon session (with a two-hour lunch break and social interactions in between).
