Abstract: China sees its future in innovation and the development of global enterprises: from “Made in China” to “Invented in China” and this goal is supported by growing investment in R&D. Yet there is a perception that Chinese firms do not have a strong basis for innovation. However, MNCs which recognise China as essential for growth now increasingly find themselves competing with innovating Chinese companies for the domestic market and for global markets. There is little recent data on how companies in China are facing up to these important issues. This panel fills the gap and reports the results of a detailed survey of innovation in companies operating in China, undertaken by Booz & Company, Bencham and the China Europe International Business School.
